Speakers:  7 million native speakers, 18 million second language speakers 
Family:  Germanic 
Status:  Official in South Africa; recognized in Namibia 
Script:  Latin 
 
  • Afrikaans is very similar to Dutch, and about 90% of the words are of Dutch originals. However, the grammar is much simpler and more streamlined than Dutch. 
  • Verbs don’t conjugate based on person, and the infinitive and present tense are the same form. 
  • Nouns don’t have grammatical gender or cases.
