- Azeri is closely related to Turkish and has some degree of mutual intelligibility .
- Azeri was written with the Cyrillic alphabet in the Soviet era (and still is in Dagestan), but now is written with the Latin alphabet within in Azerbaijan and with the Perso-Arabic script within Iran.
- As a Turkic language, Azeri is very aggluninative and many suffixes are added to root words to change meaning and grammar functions. Because of this words can become quite long.
- Azeri uses evidentiality, in which information that is known directly or indirectly is differentiated grammatically.
- Azeri has no grammatical gender and no articles. Nouns have 6 different cases.
- Verbs can be conjugated for person, tense, mood, number, and evidentiality.
- Basic word order is Subject Object Verb .
